INSTITUTE OF GEOLOGY AND MINERAL RESOURCES
Address: Peace Avenue 63 P.O. Box 118 Tel. (+976-11)-457858 Fax: (+976-11)-457858 Director: O.Tumurtogoo, Acad., D Sc, Professor,
The Institute was founded in 1966 under the name of the Institute of Geology in Mongolian Academy of Sciences. In 1997 it was amalgamated with the Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources of Ministry of Agriculture and Industry and reorganised as “Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources”(IGMR) in Mongolian Academy of Sciences. The IGMR is national research organisation in Mongolia with projects on tectonics, structural geology, geodynamics, metallogeny, stratigraphy, and petrology of igneous and sedimentary rocks. The IGMR consists of two branches: Regional geology and Mineral resources. The Branch of regional geology includy two divisions of Geodynamics and Structural Geology and Petrology, and laboratory of Mineralogy and Petrography. The Branch of Mineral resources includes two divisions, the Mesozoic-Cenozoic geology, and Mineral Deposits.
There are over 40 members of staff engaged in various research programs at the Institute, including two members of Mongolian Academy of Sciences, two Doctors of Science (D.Sc.) and 10 Doctors (Ph.D.). In addition, about 10 people are employed on a part time or temporary basis.
The aims of the Institute are to undertake fundamental research of the geology of Mongolia, to investigate and evaluate the mineral resources of the country, and to produce a modern detailed geological framework of Mongolia, in relation to that of surrounding Central Asia, in order to understand the development of the mineral deposits and their economic potential for Mongolia.
Research area:
- Stratigraphy and Sedimentalogy
- Tectonics and Geodynamics
- Structural geology and Neotectonics
- Petrology and Geochemistry
- Mineragenesis
- Geological mapping
Future research: • Paleogeodynamics of the orogenic belts • Continental rifting • Geology and mineral resources of sedimentary basins • Regional geophysics and exploration geochemistry • Limnology and climate change • Minerageny and evaluation of economic potential of mineral deposits • Geographic Information system and geologic mapping • Environmental Geology
International activities: Since 1967 the Institute carried out Russian-Mongolian joint geological research expedition and after 1990 it has established research partnerships with the Geological Survey of United States, Stanford University, University of Montana, USA., Leicester University, UK, Mainz University, Germany, JICA, Japan, Institutes of Geology, Geochemistry and the Earth’s Crust of Siberian Brunch of Russian Academy of Sciences, USGS, Institute of Geology and Geophysics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Korean Institute of Geological Sciences and Mineral Resources. |
